IRS Notice CP2501

IRS Notice CP2501: income discrepancy inquiry

A CP2501 is an early inquiry: income on a 1099 or W-2 doesn't match your return, and the IRS asks you to explain. It isn't an adjustment or a bill yet. A good reply now often settles it before a CP2000.

Why you got it

The IRS matches your return with forms from employers, banks, brokers and payment platforms. When the amounts differ, a softer CP2501 inquiry may come first, before a CP2000 with a recalculated tax.

What to do

  1. Compare each line in the letter with your 1099s, W-2s and statements.
  2. If the income is already on your return but on another line or form (for example Schedule C), explain where and attach copies.
  3. If the income really was left out, the reply usually needs an amended return, Form 1040-X. The letter says exactly what's expected.
  4. Send the reply by the date in the letter in a way that proves mailing, and keep a copy.
Don't ignore this inquiry. Without a reply the IRS recalculates your tax from its own data and sends a CP2000, often for more than you owe, because your expenses aren't in it.
